History and Culture

From primitive Celtiberian tribes, to Roman cities to Arab palaces and Castillian fortresses, students can experience first hand the legacy of Mediterranean history.  Students will gain important insights into key conceptual features of cultural evolution. You can deconstruct lunches as living history (Did the tortilla de patatas exist before the 15th century?). Examine military fortifications as problem solving puzzles (What's the defensive virtue of a maze?).  Spain offers direct experiences that lead to enduring understanding of historical and cultural processes in society, whether students are 12 or 22.

Why Art?  Why do humans from the earliest of times show any concern for how something looked, beyond the functional purpose of an object?  Why are knives decorated elegantly on the handle? Why are ordinary dishes painted?  Why elaborate knockers on doors? Why paint landscapes? No matter where you want to start your exploration of aesthetics, a place as rich as Spain offers plenty of opportunities to provoke discussions.
